Quarter
Mile horses
In 1985, Frigorífico Modelo S.A. started
cross-breeding Quarter Mile horses.
This was a result of the visit by the Inspectors
of the Quarter Mile Society to the Estancia "Caraguatá"
to brand 30 mares to start a pedigree race. These mares belonged
to a herd of light-weight draught horses used to provide the horses
pulling the ice and milk carts in Montevideo in previous decades.
The first stallion purchased at the 1985
Prado Show was called "DOUBLE MOHICANO STARLET". He
was a controlled, muscular and very intelligent horse.
"MOHICANO" still lives and his
name is to be found in the family trees of all the Company's Quarter
Mile horses.
Cross-breeding has boomed. To date over 600
colts and fillies have been registered and a similar number are
used for restocking estancias.
In 2006 we achieved national pedigree status
and we already have 15 mares and 6 geldings in this category.
By 2007 we had 2 herds with 20 mares each. Our stallions are "RIVAL
DOC" and "SANCHO".
The horses of the Frigorífico Modelo
S.A., still have the magnificent bodies they inherited from the
famous light-weight draught mares, but with the strength, the
dexterity, the intelligence and docility of the Quarter Mile horse.
